These are [url=mushroomexpert.com/phallaceae.html]stinkhorn mushrooms[/url] growing in our yard. Initially they look like eggs hiding just beneath the soil. Then this phallic pink thing shoots up. They smell like poo and that's their way of attracting flies to come and lift their spores to spread them around.
